Who we serve
The Cooke Center School educates students, ages 5 though 21, with mild to moderate cognitive or developmental disabilities that severely impact their acquisition of academic, social and daily living skills. The program is also very effective for students with severe language-based learning disabilities that significantly impact their development of academic and social skills.
The Cooke Center is a non-sectarian, non-profit organization. Cooke is committed to maintaining a student body that reflects New York's economic and cultural diversity. We make it a priority to serve every child who can benefit from our programs, regardless of the family's financial circumstances.
Admissions Process
Applications are currently available for the 2010-2011 school year. Prospective parents can obtain an application by calling the admissions office at (212) 477-1297, ext. 3, or by downloading one here.
We encourage all prospective families to learn more about our schools by attending an open house, where they can meet our staff and see first-hand how Cooke students learn in the classroom. Open houses take place through the fall, winter and early spring. View our open house schedule.
Following a review of the application, some students and families will be invited to interview. Interviews typically begin in late fall. Some interviews will be followed by a visit to the applicant's current school for a classroom observation or a discussion with their teacher.
Strong applicants will later be invited to visit an actual Cooke classroom and spend time working with our students and staff. Academic, social, and daily living skills will be taken into consideration, and placements will be offered to students whom we feel will fit best in our classrooms. Admissions decisions are first announced in early spring.
