Consulting and training
Driven by Cooke's mission to support inclusive educational programs for students with special needs, the Institute provides literacy, math and special education consulting services to inner-city charter, Catholic and independent schools; Head Start and day care centers; and private preschools. In our consulting work, Cooke seeks to build teachers' capacity to use a range of data in creating the best plans for their students. CCI approaches all of the educators we serve with a collegial respect, offering opportunities for professional growth that build on what they already know.
Literacy and Math Consulting
Cooke's consultants are experienced reading, writing and math coaches who work in each school one or two days each week, observing and meeting with teachers in their own classrooms. Based on goals set collaboratively with the principal and teachers, they model instructional techniques and offer materials and strategies for achieving balanced literacy and math programs. They meet regularly with principals to offer guidance about ways to support literacy and math instruction and excellence in teaching. They also provide workshops for teachers and other faculty on topics such as instructional grouping, differentiated reading and math, and test-taking techniques.
Special Education Consulting
These services are provided to teachers and child study teams in schools committed to better serving their at-risk students and those identified with special needs. Cooke's special education consultants observe classrooms and help teachers to understand the needs of students with learning and behavioral issues. By meeting regularly with school staff and modeling effective strategies in teachers' own classrooms, Cooke's consultants raise the ability of a school to differentiate instruction and provide a more inclusive education for all students. Consultants also help teachers use a variety of assessment data to plan instruction.
Mentoring Graduate Internships and Practicum Experiences
Cooke offers students completing their training in teaching, school psychology, social work, speech and language and occupational therapy the opportunity to fulfill their internship and practicum requirements by working with our consultants and faculty.
Cooke is grateful to the William E. Simon Foundation and HSBC Bank USA, N.A., for the generous support of our consulting and training services.
