COOKE HOME OUR PROGRAMS

The Cooke Center Elementary and High School

K-12 Academics:
Cooke partners with schools (K-12) willing to welcome our families and teachers into their community. We call this network “The Cooke Center School.” The School offers smaller classrooms, higher teacher to student ratios, individualized learning, and the support of paraprofessionals and speech, occupational and physical therapists.

We offer both full and partial inclusion options for students, depending upon their needs and abilities. Full inclusion means that students take classes in a general education classroom, with therapeutic support and consultant teachers who work with the general education teacher. Partial inclusion means that Cooke students spend most of the day in their own classroom and participate in daily inclusion activities such as arts programming, reading groups or content area classes with their general education peers.

Cooke has developed its academic programming based on a rigorous curriculum that closely follows New York State standards in all of the major content areas.

Transition to Life: Cooke established the Transition to Life program to help older students become self-sufficient and active participants within the community. The program extends our collaborations with schools to employers and community resources who offer our students training, internships and jobs. In addition, we work with students on the life skills they will need as independent adults.

Learning Centers: Cooke recognizes that many of the general education students in our schools have reading and language delays that are keeping them from reaching their full academic potential. To address this need, we offer Learning Center services to strengthen reading comprehension and language skills.

The Learning Center model is one period of services each day. The curriculum is based on the Orten Gillingham method whereby learners master important literacy skills moving from simple to more complex material. It is a sequential, comprehensive approach to reading instruction that lays the groundwork for all subsequent learning.
