Early Childhood

Special Education Itinerant Teachers: Cooke screens hundreds of preschoolers and provides intervention services through SEIT, a state-funded program which stands for Special Education Itinerant Teachers. Certified special education teachers work closely with families, preschools, day care centers, and Head Start programs to develop individualized programs that meet the needs of each child. The vast majority of the children we serve will move on to kindergarten in the public schools.

Collaboration for Inclusion is an innovative program created to improve kindergarten readiness for children living in some of the city’s poorest neighborhoods. Children with classified special education needs receive services directly in the school, children at risk for learning delays receive the educational support they need, and literacy-rich classroom environments are created to promote academic achievement for all students – those with and without disabilities.

There are two early childhood organizations collaborating with Cooke – Brooklyn Kindergarten Society and West Harlem Head Start. Together, they operate 28 classrooms in seven centers serving 600 children Manhattan and Brooklyn.
